DFS Namespace service requires a long time to process a NetDfsRemove request if the specified DFS link does not exist in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Distributed File System (DFS) Namespace service on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
  • You try to use the NetDfsRemove function to remove a DFS link that does not exist.
In this scenario, the NetDfsRemove request may require a long time to finish. Additionally, the DFS Namespace service does not respond to any other DFS-related requests until the NetDfsRemove request is finished.

For example, the DFS Namespace service stops responding for 30 minutes in a large DFS namespace when the service removes a DFS link that does not exist.

Cause

This issue occurs because the DFS Namespace service incorrectly triggers a DFS root synchronization process.

When the request for a link deletion targets a DFS link that does not exist in the namespace, a DFS root synchronization process starts. However, the DFS root synchronization process is a time-consuming process in a large DFS namespace. Therefore, the DFS Namespace service stops responding temporarily.
