Validate Operating System Installation Option test may identify Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core installation type incorrectly in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have some computers that are running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Server Core or Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Server Core.
  • You have some other computers that are running Windows Server 2008 R2 and that have the Hyper-V role installed.
  • You install the Failover Clustering feature on these computers.
  • You run the Validate Operating System Installation Option test on these computers from a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
In this scenario, you do not receive the following important message from the Validate Operating System Installation Option test:
The operating system install type (Full/Core/Hyper-V Server) is not the same for all of the servers.

This issue occurs because the Validate Operating System Installation Option test may identify the computers that are running Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core incorrectly.

Prerequisites

To apply this update, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Additionally, Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT)must be installed on the computers that are running Windows 7.

To use the update in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this update. However, you must restart the Validate a Configuration Wizard.

MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components.
