Disabling a video plug-in in WMP causes playlist to skip and time displayed to be incorrect

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are playing a video in Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7.
  • You are viewing the video full screen.
  • You have a video plug-in that you disable.
  • You are watching multiple videos in a playlist or repeat is enabled.

When you disable the plug-in Windows Media Player skips to the next item in the playlist. The Windows Media Player seekbar position and video playback time are incorrect. Note that this issue only occurs when the next item in the playlist is being prerolled for an impending playback.

Cause

The issue is caused by the way that Windows Media Player handles updating the video playback topology while the next video in the playlist has already been queued.
