FP2000: FrontPage Repeatedly Prompts for User Name and Password When You Open a Web

Symptoms

When you try to open a web with FrontPage 2000, you are repeatedly prompted for a user name and password. You also may be prompted for a user name and password when you try to save a page that you are editing.

Cause

This problem results from the way that FrontPage 2000 communicates with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0.

FrontPage 2000 relies on the proxy settings that are configured in Internet Explorer 5.0. In some cases, the proxy settings are not being detected.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, you must create a registry key to add the manual proxy configuration option to FrontPage 2000.

To create the key, follow these steps:
  1. Close all open programs.
  2. Click Start and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
  4. Move to the following folder:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions
  5. Right-click the Web Server Extensions folder, point to New, and then click Key.
  6. Name the new key Web Extender Client.
  7. Right-click the Web Extender Client folder, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  8. Name the new DWORD Value wecctlflags.
  9. Right-click the wecctlflags value, and then click Modify.
  10. Type 2 in the Value data text box.
  11. Click OK.
  12. Quit the Registry Editor.
Open FrontPage and then try to open the remote web.

In some cases in which Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 is installed, upgrading to Internet Explorer 5.0 fixes the problem. In other cases in which Internet Explorer 5.0 is installed, downgrading to Internet Explorer 4.0 fixes the problem.
