Windows crashes when you try to run the "sysprep /generalize" command after you run the "mountvol /n" command in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You run the mountvol /n command to disable automatic mounting of new basic volumes.
  • You try to run the sysprep /generalize command to prepare an installation of Windows for imaging.
In this scenario, Windows crashes and does not restart.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
