A search window opens unexpectedly after you deploy a Group Policy to disable Windows Explorer search elements in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Assume that you deploy the following Group Policy to disable Windows Explorer search elements on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2:
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\Remove Search link from Start Menu
Then, you click the taskbar and press the F3 key. In this situation, a search window opens unexpectedly.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
