"ERROR_IO_DEVICE" error message when you use the DeviceIoControl function together with the IOCTL_DISK_IS_WRITABLE control code in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Assume that you run an application that calls the DeviceIoControl function together with the IOCTL_DISK_IS_WRITABLE control code on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. This action determines whether write-protection is enabled on a floppy disk that is inserted in a  USB floppy disk drive. In this situation, you receive the following error message:
0x45d (1117) ERROR_IO_DEVICE

Cause

This issue occurs because some Small Computer Standard Interface (SCSI) command conversions for USB floppy disk drives are removed from the Usbstor.sys module in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2.
