When upgrading from Groove 2007 to SharePoint Workspace 2010 and from Groove Server 2007 to 2010, either can be upgraded first

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You use Office Groove Server 2007 to manage Groove 2007. You want to upgrade the Groove 2007 clients to Office SharePoint Workspace 2010, and Groove Server 2007 to Groove Server 2010. You want to know if you should upgrade the servers and then upgrade the desktop application, or upgrade the desktop application and then upgrade the servers.

More Information

You can upgrade either the servers or the desktop application first without compatibility problems. Groove Server 2010 can manage Groove 2007 accounts, and Groove Server 2007 can manage SharePoint Workspace 2010 accounts. However, upgrading the servers first is slightly more efficient.

An upgrade to your Manager server will involve setting up a new server with a new database and a new Groove domain. Client usage is interrupted briefly when user accounts activate to the new domain. Client usage is also interrupted by the upgrade of the desktop application. If you set up Groove Server 2010 Manager first and then upgrade Groove 2007 to SharePoint Workspace 2010, the upgrade to SharePoint Workspace includes activation to the new domain. By using this order, you only interrupt client usage one time.
