You cannot shadow a session with multiple monitors enabled in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Summary

If a Remote Desktop Session is created using the /multimon switch or by selecting the checkbox "Use all my monitors for the remote session" on the display tab, the session will not be able to be Remote Controlled or shadowed by using Remote Desktop Manager. The administrator that attempts to shadow the session will receive the error message "Access is denied" and the shadow session never starts.

This is by design.

Note: If you try to initiate the session from the command prompt, you will get Error [120]:This function is not supported on this system:

Error

To shadow a system running multiple monitors, they will need to be disabled in the Remote Desktop Connection application. To do this, uncheck the box for Use all my monitors for the remote session:

MSTSC

Workaround: Remote Assistance supports multiple monitors, and is the presently recommended solution if you need this functionality.

Note: Remote Assistance is a Windows Server Feature that must be explicitly installed on Windows Server 2008 R2; it is already installed with the client versions of the operating system.
