Windows 7 may connect to a guest network instead of a corporate network

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows 7.
  • You deploy IEEE 802.1X wired settings for a corporate network on the computer by using Group Policy settings.
  • You try to establish a wireless connection from the computer to the corporate network.
In this scenario, the computer may connect to a guest network instead of the corporate network.

Note This hotfix does not apply to wireless connections because such connections are service set identifier (SSID) based. The .dll files that are updated are only for wired connections. There are no wireless .dll files that are updated by this hotfix.

Cause

This issue occurs because Windows loads the default (local) profile before the profile that is managed by the Group Policy object (GPO). Therefore, the default 802.1X settings are loaded instead of the settings in the Group Policy object when you try to establish a wireless connection to the corporate network.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:

MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
