Known issues and limitations when using virtualized Office 2010 applications on App-V 4.6 and App-V 4.5 SP2 clients

Known issues when Office applications are virtualized

Office Deployment Kit only supports MAK, KMS or Volume license product keys
The Office 2010 App-V Deployment kit is the tool used to manage the licenses for an Office 2010 package. This will install the Office Software Protection Platform service and will request a KMS license from a KMS server, or use the MAK keys provided during the installation. The only licenses that can be used with the deployment kit are the ones with MAK,KMS or Volume License (VL) in their name. Although there are multiple activation keys if they are not labeled as MAK, KMS or Volume license they will not work with the deployment kit.

For example, the below key type will not work with the deployment kit:

AA Lab Key - This lab use key is for Academic Alliance programs and allows multiple activations. ITs labeled as multiple activation but its not labeled as MAK, if type of key is used it will consider the key a retail instead of multiple activation.

The following will work with the deployment kit:

AA MAK Key - This is a multiple activation key for Academic Alliance program customers. This one will work as its labeled MAK.

AA VA 1.0 - This volume license key (VA 1.0) is for Academic Alliance programs and allows multiple installations. 

When using the deployment kit and specifying several license modes for Visio 2010 the highest license mode is used

When deploying a virtualized version of Visio 2010 and several license modes are specified for Visio, the highest mode is selected. Here is an example of a command:

msiexec /i OffVirt.msi  PROPLUS=1 VISIOPREM=1 VISIOSTD=1 VISIOPRO=1

The result of the above command is that the VISIOPREM license will be applied. This behavior is discussed in the following blog:

To work around this issue you will need to deploy the Offvirt.msi with only the license mode that is required on the machine.  An example is provided below:

msiexec /i OffVirt.msi  PROPLUS=1 VISIOSTD=1

Note: The Office Deployment Kit is a per computer application. If the installation is performed on a Remote Desktop Services (RDS) server, the switches used in the last installation will apply. 

SharePoint sites may load slowly

Office co-existence: Locally installed Outlook 2007 does not work after you have used Outlook 2010
Outlook 2010 will upgrade profile and mailbox information, and Outlook 2007 may not function properly once these upgrades have been made by Outlook 2010.

The following error message may occur on an App-V client when accessing a document library in SharePoint:


If you reinstall the Deployment Kit multiple times on an App-V client, the  “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\14.0\CVH” registry keys may not be populated properly. To resolve this issue, uninstall the Deployment Kit, restart the system and reinstall the Deployment Kit.

Unable to create a new block timeline in Visio 2010

Unable to see the names of other users editing shared Excel workbooks at the same time

The following registry keys/values must be removed from the sequenced Office 2010 virtual package:

Known limitations when Office applications are virtualized

Outlook emails are not included in Windows Search results
If Outlook 2010 is virtualized, no results are returned when you use the Windows Search feature on Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 to search for emails.

Office co-existence: Office documents may not open in the expected version when using multiple versions of Office

Office co-existence: Office documents on a SharePoint site are opened in the virtualized version of Office rather than the locally installed version
The SharePoint OpenDocuments ActiveX Control can only support one instance of Office (local or virtualized). When the Office Deployment Kit is installed with the SharePoint proxy settings, the virtualized version of Office will be used to open Office documents on a SharePoint site.

Office co-existence: If Outlook 2007 is installed locally and Outlook 2010 is virtualized, the Send To mail recipient option will open a message in Outlook 2007 rather than Outlook 2010
To work around this issue, uninstall the locally installed version of Outlook.

The “Connect to Outlook” feature is not available when viewing a calendar on a SharePoint site 
If you view a calendar on a SharePoint site and select the Calendar option under Calendar Tools, the “Connect to Outlook” option is not available.

In Windows Explorer, the SharePoint Shared Folder Synchronization menu is not displayed.

The SharePoint multiple uploads feature is not available

The “Send to OneNote 2010” printer option is not available
The Send To OneNote 2010 printer option requires the Office package to be properly configured for the virtual proxies and to be deployed globally to the machine.  Deployments using the App-V Management Server or other per-user package deployments will not expose the Send To OneNote 2010 printer functionality.

The “Send to OneNote” feature in Internet Explorer and other applications is not available.

Unable to search for shapes in Visio 2010. Searching for shapes will return the following message:
Could not find a match. Please search again.

Infopath XML files fail to open with the following error when launched from a SharePoint document library:

Microsoft does not support virtualizing the Microsoft Online Services Sign-In Assistant
The Microsoft Online Services Sign-In Assistant is included with Microsoft Office Professional Plus for Office 365. If Microsoft Office is virtualized, the Microsoft Online Services Sign-In Assistant must be installed locally on the App-V client.
