Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 Setup will not recognise SharePoint 2010 during Role Center and Enterprise Portal Deployment even though the setup files have been patched with hotfix 2278963

Symptom

We are running Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 with Service Pack 1 and Hotfix Rollup 6. We want to deploy Role Centers and Enterprise Portal on a server running SharePoint Server 2010. We have patched our AX 2009 installation files with the updated "Setup assemblies" that ship with hotfix KB2278963. However when we run setup.exe and select option to install Role Centers and Enterprise Portal, setup displays a screen to install pre-requisite software, which includes installing Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP 1. It is failing to detect that SharePoint Server 2010 has been deployed.

Cause

AX 2009 Setup.exe, invokes a sub-process, axsetup.exe which is in charge of deploying the feature, and it is this that is failing to detect the installation of Sharepoint 2010. It detects this by reading the value of the "version" registry key under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\14.0". However on this particular server the "version" key was missing. SharePoint 2010 was deployed using powershell scripts and it fails to create the appropriate version registry key and value.

Resolution

Manually created a REG_SZ key called Version and set its value to 14.0.0.4762 under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\14.0" and re-ran AX 2009 setup.exe and it detects and allows to continue deployment of Role Centers and Enterprise Portal
