Symptoms

Applications or services that use remote procedure call (RPC) functions crash on a Windows Server 2003-based computer after you install the following Microsoft security update:

Cause

This issue occurs because an internal structure that was never created is accessed during the unmarshaling phase of the RPC call for a top-level OLE pointer. This leads to an access violation exception in the application or in the process that loads the RPCRT4.dll module.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
