Event error 3006 - Unable to read the performance counter strings on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

After booting into Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 and application event error 3006 is logged:




NOTE
: Where xxx is the language ID number i.e. for example 009 for English.


This generally occurs within the first 10 minutes or so after boot.

Cause


Typically the event would be triggered / logged when the Language ID key and Counter strings exists in the following key, in this case it is a known issue Microsoft is aware of and working to resolve in a future version of windows.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib

Summary

You can safely ignore the events. The tools that depend on these Counter strings can still read them and will function normally.

Microsoft is aware that this is a known issue and is working on resolving it in a future version of windows.

NOTE: Language ID registry values will usually correspond to the last two digits of an existing Language LCID.

For example:

-English - United Status LCID is 0409, where in the perflib Language ID registry value would be 009

-Romanian LCID is 0418, where the perflib Language ID registry value would be 018

* Additionally you can map the language ID Key to those stored in the registry at the following location:

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\MUI \Settings AND \UILanguages
