Windows XP clients intermittently receive an error message saying "file not found" when Opening or Deleting files from a Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 file server

Symptoms

  • You have a Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 acting as your file server hosting redirected desktop files for Windows XP SP3 clients.
  • User tries to open or delete files from the redirected desktop on a Windows XP SP3 client machine that has the desktop hosted on the Windows Storage Server 2008 R2.
  • Offline files are enabled for the files on the redirected desktop.
  • The Windows XP SP3 client machines intermittently get the following pop up message:
Title: Error deleting file or folder

Cannot delete <file name>. Cannot find the specified file.

Make sure you specify the correct path and file name.

Cause

File system aliasing is turned off by default on Windows Storage server 2008 R2.

Resolution

Perform the following steps on the Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 to enable file system aliasing.

a) Create the following registry value at the location specified below on the Windows Storage Server 2008 R2:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters\
DWORD: NoAliasingOnFileSystem
Value Data: 0

b) Ensure the NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation is also set to 0 at the same registry location as in step a) above.

c) Reboot the Windows Storage Server 2008 R2.
