"Stop 0x000000ab" error when you log off from a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista and that has a nonstandard VGA driver installed

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • You install a nonstandard video graphics adapter (VGA) driver on the computer.
  • You log off from the computer.
� In this scenario, you may receive a Stop error that resembles the following:�
Stop 0x000000ab ( parameter1 , parameter2 , parameter3 , parameter4 )
SESSION_HAS_VALID_POOL_ON_EXIT
Notes
  • The parameters in this error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all "0x000000ab" Stop errors are caused by this issue.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a race condition between one thread in the Winlogon.exe process and the other thread in the Explorer.exe process. When the race condition occurs, a pool that has the Gicm tag leaks in the session pool, and you receive the Stop error that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
