You fail to install Windows Updates, Hotfixes, Service Pack, Internet Explorer or .NET Framework on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP

Symptoms

In any of the following scenarios, the installation process may fail:

• You try to install Service Pack on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP,
• You try to install Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP,
• You try to install Windows Updates or Hotfixes on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP,
• You try to install .net framework 3.5 SP1 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP,

When these failures occur, you may see errors similar to the following in the Svcpack.log or WindowsUpodate.log files:

Service Pack 3 Setup canceled.
<KB number> Setup canceled.

You may also find one of the following error codes in the log files:

error code = 0x8024000B
error code = 0xf070
error code = 0xf00d

Cause

This issue can be caused by the corrupted or invalid Spupdsvc.exe or Spupdsvc.inf file inside %WinDir%\System32 folder.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, rename the Spupdsvc.exe and Spupdsvc.inf to different file names, such as SpupdsvcOld.exe or Spupdsvc.old.
