Symptoms

When you use Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Outlook Web Access (OWA) and you attempt to type the URL address of an e-mail message that contains certain symbols, you receive the following error message:
Page can not be displayed

An example of such a URL address for a message with a subject of "Test?" is:
http://servername/exchange/username/inbox/test?.eml

Cause

This behavior occurs with escaped characters such as the pound sign (#), the question mark (?), or the asterisk (*). Escaped characters cannot be used in un-escaped form in URLs. The URL name of the message will be changed to "test%3F.eml" or something similar.

Resolution

Select the message from within the OWA Inbox by double-clicking it instead of manually inputting the URL address.

Status

This behavior is by design. The escaped characters are converted to a set of characters that can be used within the URL.
