Switching from an HDMI connected display while playing a video may result in having to restart the video on Windows 7

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have two displays and one supports audio through an HDMI or DisplayPort connection.
  • The desktop is only displayed on one display.
  • You are playing a video on only one of the displays.
  • You switch from the active display which supports video and audio to the other display using Win+P. 
The audio component of the video that is playing is lost.

Cause

The audio can fail to switch from HDMI/DisplayPort display that supports audio to another supported audio device.

Restart the video.

It is recommended not to switch between displays while actively playing videos.
