You cannot open a rights-protected Office 2010 document in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

Consider the following scenario:

• You have a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
• An extranet URL is specified for the Rights Management Services (RMS) server.
• You try to open a rights-protected document in Microsoft Office 2010. �

In this scenario, you cannot open the document if the extranet URL is invalid. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

This issue occurs because of an error in the DRMGetServiceLocation�function. Microsoft Office 2010 uses this function to retrieve the URL of a server that can perform various�Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS), such as computer and user activation or license acquisition. In this scenario, the DRMGetServiceLocation function always returns the extranet URL. If the URL is invalid, the function fails.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

The English (United States) version of this hotfix installs files that have the attributes that are listed in the following tables.
