Symptoms

The error message

"The project '<myProjectName>.csproj' could not be opened.  The Windows Phone project could not be opened because a valid installation of the Windows Phone Developer Tools could not be found.  Please reinstall or repair the tools and try again."

an be generated when you attempt to:

  - Open a new or existing Phone project in Expression Blend
  - Select Open in Expression Blend from the context menu in VS2010 Solution Explorer.

Cause

The trial version of Microsoft Expression Studio 4 has been installed after the Windows Phone Developer Tools RTM was installed.

Resolution

1.     Uninstall the Expression Blend 4

2.     Download WPDT_RTM_en1.iso From the following website:

Windows Phone Developer Tools RTW
3.     From the downloaded ISO create an image to DVD

4.     Run the self-extracting Blend_WindowsPhone_en from the DVD.  It will be located here

   ..\WPDTInstall\WCU\WindowsPhone
