An XPS printer is very slow to print graphics in Windows Vista SP2 and in Windows Server 2008 SP2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following two scenarios:

Scenario 1
  • You install the Terminal Services role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You enable the Terminal Services Easy Print feature or the Remote Desktop Services Easy Print feature on the computer.
  • You create a terminal server session or a remote desktop session to the computer from a client computer.
  • You use the printer driver for Microsoft XPS Document Writer on the client computer to print a document that contains graphics in the terminal server session or in the remote desktop session.
Scenario 2
  • You install an XML Paper Specification (XPS) printer driver for an XPS printer on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows Vista SP2
    • Windows Server 2008 SP2
  • You send a document that contains some complex graphics of a large size to the XPS printer.
In both scenarios, you experience a longer time than usual to print the documents. For example, it may take from 5 to 10 minutes to print a document that usually takes 10 seconds to print. Additionally, some large spool files that are several megabytes in size are generated when the print jobs are processed.

Cause

This issue occurs because the printer takes a long time to process a very large spool file that is generated by the client computer. The client computer cannot optimize the printing of some XPS files that contain custom dashed pens. This behavior causes the client computer to generate a very large spool file.

Note When the Terminal Services Easy Print feature or the Remote Desktop Services Easy Print feature is enabled, a Graphics Device Interface (GDI)-based print job is converted to the XPS format on the terminal server or on the remote desktop server. Then, the XPS file is transferred back to the client computer. The client computer prints the job by using the local printer driver.

Resolution

Note Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 add support for cosmetic lines in XPS documents. However, this affects the performance of line rendering in XPS documents because the new feature creates many primitives. This hotfix optimizes the new feature to remove additional primitives when an XPS document is rendered.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The files that apply to a specific product, SR_Level (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
