Symptoms

When you install several Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server computers at the same time, you may receive the following error message:
Setup was unable to access the Windows 2000 Active Directory. Possible Causes: this machine is not a member of a Windows 2000 domain; no domain controller for this domain was available; or you are logged on to the local machine and not to the domain.

Cause

When several Exchange 2000 servers are installed at the same time, two or more of them may attempt to write to the Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory at the same time. Only the first Exchange 2000 server to make the attempt can successfully write to the Active Directory and all subsequent servers will not succeed. This prevents Exchange 2000 Setup from working on all the servers that are unable to access the Active Directory.

Workaround

Do not run Exchange 2000 Setup on more than one server at a time within the same Windows 2000 forest.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
