When running DCPROMO on an HPC 2008 R2 server, it will appear to fail with error “Failed to enable Active directory Web services”

Symptoms

When running DCPROMO on an HPC 2008 R2 server, the process will fail with an error of “Failed to enable Active directory Web services”.

In addition, the Active Directory Admin Center is installed but may not work properly and Active Directory PowerShell commands will fail.

Cause

This error occurs because the HPC edition does not include the Active Directory Web Services service (ADWS). Additionally, Active Directory specific PowerShell commands are not available.

Resolution

The exclusion of this service is intentional and does not negatively impact the domain controller (DC) scenario. While the DCPROMO process will appear to fail, DC functionality is successfully configured.
