It is not recommended to journal to a distribution group with Exchange 2003

Symptoms

When you enable envelope journaling with Exchange 2003 and set the journal recipient to a Distribution Group, you find that message reports such as Read Receipts, Delivery Receipts, and�Out of Office messages are not journaled.

Cause

Distribution Groups in Exchange do not accept Report.IPM message class items.

Due to the potential for mail loops, when�you send as a Distribution Group to�a Distribution Group, the information store will not deliver any system message created by a rule. For example: read receipt, delivery report,�or Out of Office messages (i.e. Report.IPM class).

An Report.IPM message can only have one recipient.

Resolution

It is recommended in Exchange Server 2003 to journal to a single mailbox recipient.�

Journaling to a Distribution Group in Exchange Server 2003 is not recommended or supported.

More information

If you must journal to more than one recipient for redundancy:

1)�Set up a single journaling mailbox

2) Run Outlook with a forwarding rule, to forward the journal report to a Distribution List which contains two journaling mailboxes.
