The call operation fails with error code "0x800706f7" when you run an application that calls the OleCreateFromFile() function to create an embedded object from the contents of a named file in a 64-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows 7

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows 7.
  • You run an application that calls the OleCreateFromFile() function to create an embedded object from the contents of a named file on the computer.
In this scenario, the call operation may fail and return the "0x800706f7" error code.

Note This issue occurs if the OLE server is 32-bit.

Resolution

Hotfix information

More Information

To reproduce the problem, follow these steps:
  1. Install a 32-bit version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  2. Open a 64-bit version of WordPad.
  3. Click Insert Object.
  4. Select the Create from File option.
  5. Locate and select a PDF file, and then click Open.
  6. In the Insert Object dialog box, click Ok.
You expect that the PDF file will be embedded in the WordPad document. However, WordPad instead returns the following error message:
Failed to create object. Make sure the application is entered in the system registry.
