System message 6675 when you confirm a shipper for a drop ship sales order in Microsoft Dynamics SL

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario in Inventory and Order Management in Microsoft Dynamics SL 7.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3):
  • You create a sales order on the Sales Orders (40.100.00) screen for a lot tracked inventory ID.
  • You select the Drop Ship check box on the line items tab of the Sales Orders (40.100.00) screen.
  • You save and finish the sales order.
  • You confirm shipping for the resulting shipper on either the Release or Confirm Shipper (40.110.01) screen or the Shipment Confirmation (40.117.00) screen.
In this scenario, you receive the following error message when you confirm the shipper:

System message 6675- "Quantity will go negative."

This problem also occurs for an inventory ID that is not lot tracked when the quantity in inventory is less than the quantity that was ordered on the drop ship sales order.
