Error 0x84B30002 when you perform Edition Upgrade of a SQL Server instance


Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a system that has an instance of SQL Server 2008 that you need to upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2.
  • On this system you do not have any other instance of SQL Server 2008 R2.

In this scenario, if you select Edition Upgrade option in the Maintenance page of SQL Server Installation Center, you will notice the following error message when you click on the message box that reads: 
Edition Upgrade was done successfully

SQL Server Setup failure.
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:
The state of your SQL Server installation was not changed after the setup execution. Please review the summary.txt logs for further details.
Error code 0x84B30002.

Note: The same error message may happen in other scenarios as well. This article only discusses one specific scenario where this error is raised.

Cause

The error occurs because an incorrect option was selected for upgrading the SQL Server 2008 instance. The Edition Upgrade option is for upgrading an existing instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 to a different edition.

Resolution

Use Upgrade from SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008 option under the Installation page of the SQL Server Installation Center for upgrading your SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005 or a SQL Server 2008 instance to SQL Server 2008 R2.
