A shortcut link that points to a file on a network share is missing after Windows Easy Transfer Migration from a Windows XP computer to a Windows 7 computer

Symptoms

After using the Windows Easy Transfer tool to migrate files from a Windows XP to a Windows 7 machine, you may notice that some shortcut icons are missing. This may occur with icons that are mapped to items stored on a network location.

Cause

This will occur if the item that the shortcut is pointing to is not reachable on the network by the target computer.

For example, you may have a shortcut to a document stored on a network location on your Windows XP desktop. You use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate user data from this Windows XP machine to a new Windows 7 machine. If the Windows 7 machine does not have access to the target item or location on the network, the icon will not be created on the desktop.

Resolution

There are two workarounds to this issue:

1. Ensure that the new machine has access to the same network locations as the old machine.

2. When choosing a shortcut that links to a network shared file, manually select the source file on the network share to include it in the migration.
