"The server returned content type text/html" error message or "System.IO.IOException" exception after you upgrade a server from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have two files in Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2008 (TFS 2008). For example, you have file A and file B. The earlier name of file B is same as the current name of file A.
  • You edit and check in the two files in the same changeset by using the source control in TFS 2008.
  • You upgrade the TFS 2008 server to TFS 2010.
  • You edit file A, and then you check it in.
  • A user tries to download the earlier version of file A.
In this scenario, the user may encounter one of the following issues:
  • If the user connects to TFS by using web access, a System.IO.IOException exception is thrown, and the user receives the following error message:
    Unable to read data from the transport connection: The connection was closed.
  • If the user connects to TFS by using Team Explorer, the user receives the following error message:
    The server returned content type text/html, which is not supported.

Cause

This issue occurs because a delta job on the TFS 2010 application tier server incorrectly marks a file. For example, the delta job should mark file A. However, the delta job marks file B instead. Therefore, an exception is thrown on the TFS 2010 application tier server, and the following exception message and stack trace are generated.

Exception Message

Data is Null. This method or property cannot be called on Null values. (type SqlNullValueException)

Stack Trace

at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlBuffer.get_Int64()at Microsoft.TeamFoundation.VersionControl.Server.ItemComposition..ctor(SqlDataReader reader)at Microsoft.TeamFoundation.VersionControl.Server.ContentComponent.QueryFileContents(Int32 fileId)

This exception causes the issue that is described in the “Symptoms” section.
