Event ID 3 is logged in the Application log if you run the User Profile Synchronization service after you install hotfix package 2281364 or 2352342 in SharePoint Server 2010

Symptoms

You apply the hotfix package for SharePoint Server 2010 that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 2281364 or 2352342. If the User Profile Synchronization service is run on the server, the following events are logged in the Application log:

Cause

This issue occurs because the versions of Microsoft.ResourceManagement.Service.exe and Microsoft.ResourceManagement.dll do not match the versions that are specified in the WorkflowDefinition table in the Forefront Identity Manager Service database.

Workaround


These errors do not affect the functionality of the Profile Synchronization feature, and you can safely ignore them.

It is possible to work around the issue by deleting and re-creating the User Profile Service application.

NoteBe aware that using this workaround may delete the existing user profile, social tag data, and notes data.

To delete and re-create the User Profile Service application, follow these steps:
  1. In SharePoint Server 2010, click Central Administration in the navigation pane, and then click Manage service applications on the Application Management menu.
  2. Select User Profile Service Application, and then delete it without deleting the data.
  3. In the dialog box that appears, clear the Delete data associated with the Service Applications option.
  4. Delete the Sync database from the SQL Server.
  5. Create a new User Profile Service Application from the Manage service applications page by using the existing user profile and social databases.
  6. Use the previous database names for the user profile and social databases.
  7. Click Central Administration in the navigation pane, click Manage services on server on the System Settings menu, and then enable the User Profile Synchronization service.
  8. Re-create the synchronization connections, and then start full profile synchronization.
