Windows Server 2008 cannot be installed or started on a computer that has one terabyte or more of RAM

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install one terabyte or more of memory on a computer. For example, you have a computer that contains 64 memory slots, and each memory slot has 16 gigabytes (GB) of random access memory (RAM).
  • You try to install or to start an x64-based version of Windows Server 2008 on the computer.
In this scenario, you cannot install or start the x64-based version of Windows Server 2008 on the computer.

Cause

This issue occurs because the computer stores information at some physical addresses that are beyond the one-terabyte address. These physical addresses are more than 40 bits long. When these physical addresses are mapped to the page tables for Windows, they are truncated to 28 bits to comply with the definition for a page-table entry. This behavior prevents the installation or startup of an x64-based version of Windows Server 2008.

Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are very important for maintaining the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
