A process that connects to a smart card hangs when a program that requires you to use the smart card crashes in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008, in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a smart card that is installed on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You run a program that requires you to use the smart card.
  • The program crashes.
  • You run another program that requires you to use the smart card.

In this scenario, all programs that try to use the smart card do not successfully connect to the smart card. When this situation occurs, the process that connects to the smart card hangs.

Cause

This problem occurs when a program has exclusive access to a smart card by calling the SCardBeginTransaction function. When a program that has called the SCardBeginTransaction function is stopped or exits without calling the SCardEndTransaction function, the smart card service may enter a state in which any other programs that try to obtain exclusive access to the smart card hang.

Workaround

To work around this problem, remove and then re-insert the smart card. Or, restart the Smart Card service.

To restart the Smart Card service, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, type services.msc in the search box, and then press Enter.
  2. Right-click the Smart Card service, and then click Stop.
  3. Right-click the Smart Card service, and then click Start.
