Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have Windows Search 4.0 installed on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).
  • At the command prompt, you create a new file under the root of an indexed drive that is not the system drive.
In this scenario, you cannot find the file by using the search box on the Start menu.

This issue occurs because the file is not indexed when you create the file under the root of a drive at the command prompt.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, your computer must be running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Additionally, you must have Windows Search 4.0 installed on the computer.

Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista file information notes
Important Windows Server 2008 hotfixes and Windows Vista hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page.
