Microsoft advisory services engagement scenario - windows 2000 to windows server 2008 r2 dfsn

Note: This article discusses a scenario that may be addressed by Microsoft Advisory Services.

Microsoft Advisory Services is an hourly fee-based, consultative support option that provides proactive support beyond your break-fix product maintenance needs. This is a remote, phone-based support option that includes working with the same technician for assistance with issues like product migration, code review, or new program development. This service is typically used for shorter engagements, and is designed for developers and IT professionals who do not require the traditional onsite consulting or sustained account management services that are available from other Microsoft support options. This article also provides some self-help resources for this scenario.

For additional information on Microsoft Advisory Services, including on how to engage, refer to this Microsoft web page:

Microsoft advisory services engagement

This Advisory Services scenario is designed to assist customers who are replacing their Windows 2000 Distributed File System (DFS) with Windows Server 2008 R2 Distributed File System Namespace (DFSN).

The DFS Namespace servers will be replaced. This will require installing the DFS Namespace role, adding the new server(s) as a DFS root, and removing the obsolete DFS root target servers. This scenario will be limited to either a single standalone DFS server or multiple DFS servers for a single domain based DFS namespace.

  • If standalone DFS, utilize dfsutil to export the DFS settings and import to Windows Server 2008 R2 DFSN
  • If domain based DFS, replace Windows 2000 DFS root target servers with Windows Server 2008 R2 (Adding new root target and removing old target)

Out of Scope
  • Creating new DFSN if one doesnt exist
  • Replicating file data with DFSR
  • Adding DFSN folders or folder targets
  • Configuring DFSN cluster

Time estimates for scenario

  1. Are they using DFS?
No: Stop. This offering only applies to an existing DFS infrastructure
  2. Do they have domain based or standalone DFS?
This will determine what approach to take to replace the Windows 2000 DFS servers. If the DFS server is a standalone, only one standalone server will be covered in this scenario. If the DFS is domain based, then the server replacement will be limited to Windows 2000 servers within the same namespace.
  3. Are they using cluster (MSCS) for DFS?
Yes: Stop. This scenario does not cover clustering DFS
  4. Is the Windows 2000 DFS server replicating files using FRS?
Yes:Stop. This scenario will not apply.Since FRS is not supported in Windows Server 2008 R2, FRS replication must bedecommissioned.FRS to DFSR planning is offered in another ProAdvisory scenario
  5. If domain based DFS, how many DFS domain based roots
Servers to be replace will be limited to within the same domain based DFS namespace
  6. How many DFS root target servers to be replaced?
Time needs to be added for each server to be replaced
