The scan application does not start automatically when you push the scan button on a scanner or on a multifunction printer in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows 7

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

The Windows Fax and Scan service registers applications and associates the scanner hardware events. For example, the service associates the scan button hardware event. However, if you use this service on a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer, the scan application does not start automatically when you push the scan button on a scanner or on a multifunction printer (MFP).

Cause

This issue occurs because of a change in the ShellHwDetection service. The ShellHwDetection service hosts the WiaRpc component for the Windows image acquisition (WIA) service. The ShellHwDetection service stops after a period of inactivity that is detected. When the ShellHwDetection service stops, it also stops the WIA service. And, the WIA service remains in a stopped state even though it is configured for automatic startup when the user logs in again.
