When executing DirectX applications on a laptop with dual chipsets, you may experience a sudden loss of the images rendered

Symptoms

When you are executing a DirectX application on a laptop that has dual chipsets for multiple displays, you may experience a sudden loss of the images rendered on your application and/or the application will put up an error dialog. This may happen under the following conditions, for example:

-  You start the application on the primary display.  Then, you press (Windows-p) to switch to projector-only mode.  This also happens in reverse order.
-  You start the application.  You unplug the power cable from the laptop.  This shifts the laptop graphics to a low power mode, which results in a different video adapter being used.

Windows Media Player (WMP) is an application that is affected by this behavior. If WMP is running when this switch occurs, it may stop playback or the output displayed may become corrupt. If playback stops, an error dialog will appear with the message that there is a problem with your video card. If this occurs, WMP will not be able to continue playback from this point. Users will have to restart playback manually from the beginning.

Cause

This may happen anytime the system switches to a different graphics adapter while your DirectX application is running. You will lose your main Direct3D object, since the hardware device is no longer present to the Direct3D application. That object cannot be restored.

Resolution

This is a known behavior for DirectX applications running on machines with multiple GPU's that can be disabled at any time. Users are recommended to restart the application.
