In Windows Server 2008 R2, the DNS Server service might crash when it handles many concurrent queries that are submitted through the DNS server plug-in interface

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install the Domain Name System (DNS) Server role on a computer that is running Windows Server R2.
  • You use the DNS server plug-in interface to concurrently submit many queries for the same domain name to the DNS server.
In this scenario, the DNS Server service might crash.

Cause

This problem occurs because the DNS Server service becomes corrupted when it handles concurrent queries that are submitted from a DNS server plug-in interface.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem that is described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, your computer must be running Windows Server 2008 R2. Additionally, the computer must have the DNS Server role installed.

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Note To avoid rebooting, you can stop the DNS Server service before you install the hotfix.
