Symptoms

If you install Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server in an existing Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 site, all mail-enabled users replicate to Exchange Server 5.5 and all mailboxes replicate to Exchange 2000. You cannot delete a replicated mail-enabled user with the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program. If you try to do so, you receive the following error message:
The action could not be completed because the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is unavailable. Be sure the service is running and you have network connectivity to the Microsoft Exchange server computer.

Cause

The Exchange 2000 information store does not support the Exchange Server 5.5 delete mailbox remote procedure (RPC) call. However, Exchange Server 5.5 does support the Exchange 2000 information store delete mailbox call.
