A WIA application crashes when you try to adjust the brightness or contrast of a picture that is scanned in Windows 7, in Windows Server 2008 R2, in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • You connect the computer to a Web Services on Devices (WSD) scanner.
  • The scanner does not have brightness or contrast adjustment enabled.
  • You scan a picture by using a Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) 1.0 application, such as mspaint.exe.
  • You try to run a Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) 1.0 application, such as mspaint.exe, on the computer to scan a picture.
  • You click From scanner and camera, and then click Adjust the quality of the scanned picture to adjust the brightness or the contrast of the scanned picture.
In this scenario, the WIA application crashes.

This issue occurs because of an error in the WIA service.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
