MDT 2010 Update 1: Error Message "The specified Windows component could not be found: Microsoft-Windows-DirectoryServices-DOmainController-SrvFnd-Package"

Symptoms

When deploying Windows Server 2008 R2 Core Edition using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 Update 1(MDT) you may receive the following error message:

"The specified Windows component could not be found:Microsoft-Windows-DirectoryServices-DOmainController-SrvFnd-Package"

If you click okay on that error message you will see the following additional error message:
"Deployment did not complete successfully. Review Deployment logs for full details."

The BDD.log will show the following:

ERROR - ADDS role configuration with DCPromo failed , rc = 25

Cause

This can occur if you configured your MDT tasks sequence to run the "Install Roles and Features" step and you have enabled "Active Directory Domain Services(Core). MDT uses the OCSETUP.EXE command to add roles/features. This works fine with non-core edition versions but for a core edition you cannot use OCSETUP.EXE to add the "Active Directory Domain Services(Core)" role. When you run the dcpromo command it automatically adds the role.

Resolution

If you are installing Windows Server 2008 R2 Core Edition and want to enable the Domain Controller role you need to configure the task sequence as follows

Ensure that Active Directory Domain Services (Core) is not enabled(Unchecked) in the "Install roles and features" step
Ensure that you have the "Configure ADDS" Step enabled and configured for your domain controller settings

More Information

The "Configure ADDS" step runs the following command:

cmd /C C:\Windows\system32\dcpromo.exe /answer:C:\Users\ADMINI~1\AppData\Local\Temp\AD_Answer.txt

The AD_Answer.txt contains the following information(based on what you entered in Task Sequencer editor in the MDT console)

[DCInstall]
DatabasePath = C:\Windows\NTDS
LogPath = C:\Windows\NTDS
SysVolPath = C:\Windows\SYSVOL
RebootOnSuccess = NoAndNoPromptEither
SafeModeAdminPassword =
ReplicaOrNewDomain = ReadOnlyReplica
ReplicaDomainDnsName = contoso
ReplicationSourceDC = ServerA
UserName = administrator
UserDomain = contoso
Password =
ConfirmGC = Yes

To troubleshoot other errors with this step you can manually run the command listed above to see what the output is. Note you will need to edit AD_Answer.txt and add the Password and SafeModeAdminPassword entries back in since MDT removes this line for security reasons at end of the task sequence. For example you may see error that you need to run adprep /forestprep.
