Visual Studio 2008 SP1 crashes when you open a BIDS project


Symptoms

You may experience one or more of the following symptoms when you open a Microsoft SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) project in Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1):
  • Visual Studio 2008 SP1 crashes.
  • You receive an access violation error message in Devenv.exe.

Cause

This issue can occur because of a race condition that occurs when the Dataflow Design Surface in a SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) package is drawn, and certain font objects are released.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack or the next version that contains this hotfix.
