XL2000: Invalid Page Fault When You Assign Macro to Custom Menu Item

Symptoms

When you assign a macro to a custom menu item, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 015f:30089da0.

Cause

This problem occurs when you perform the following steps (in order):
1.You assign a shortcut key to a macro.
2.You press the shortcut key to run the macro.
3.You assign the macro to a custom menu item.

Workaround

To work around this problem, do not press the shortcut key to run the macro until after you assign the macro to the custom menu item.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

More information

Although you can normally run the macro by using the shortcut key or custom menu item, if you use the shortcut key, and then create the custom menu item consecutively in a single instance of Microsoft Excel, you receive the error message.
