You cannot start a RemoteAPP program that is hosted on a Windows XP SP3 virtual machine through Terminal Services Web Access or Remote Desktop Web Access in Windows Server 2008 R2, in Windows 7 or in Windows Vista

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You publish a RemoteApp program through Terminal Services Web Access (TS Web Access) or through Remote Desktop Web Access (RD Web Access).
  • The RemoteApp program is hosted on a Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) virtual machine.
  • You start the RemoteApp program through TS Web Access or through RD Web Access from a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 or Windows Vista. And, this computer installs Remote Desktop Connection 7.0.
In this scenario, the RemoteApp connection does not start. If you click the Details button, the full remote desktop of the virtual machine is displayed.

Cause

The issue occurs because the RemoteApp session is initiated incorrectly when the session is started by the web interface.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows Vista file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page.
