Windows Media Player stops responding in Windows 7 when you play an AVI video or a playlist that consists of AVI videos

Symptoms

Symptom 1

You have Windows Media Player and Windows Internet Explorer installed on a computer that is running Windows 7. When you use Windows Media Player to play an AVI video that is hosted on a web server, Windows Media Player may stop responding.

This issue occurs in one of the following scenarios:
  • You use Internet Explorer to open a webpage that contains some links to AVI videos. Then, you click a link to open an AVI video in Windows Media player, and you repeat this operation several times.
  • You click Open URL on the File menu in Windows Media Player to open AVI videos that are hosted on a web server.

Symptom 2

You use Windows Media Player to play a playlist that consists of some AVI videos on a computer that is running Windows 7. In this scenario, Windows Media Player stops responding somewhere in the playlist.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Windows 7 file information note
