Symptoms

When you refresh your PivotTable report, Microsoft Excel may appear to stop responding. After a few minutes, you receive the following error message:
Cannot connect to the data source
'Cannot instantiate MSOLAPUI prompt dialog component.'.

Cause

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • Your PivotTable report was created using data stored in an Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) database.

    -and-

  • You used the Create Cube File wizard to create a local OLAP cube.

    -and-

  • Your PivotTable report is currently using the local OLAP cube as its source data.

    -and-

  • You are currently unable to connect to the OLAP database used to create your PivotTable report.
When you refresh your PivotTable report while it is connected to a local OLAP cube, Excel attempts to reconnect to the database on the server in order to refresh the contents of the local OLAP cube.

Workaround

You must reconnect to your network in order to refresh your PivotTable report.

More information

When you base your PivotTable on a local cube file, you have the flexibility to manipulate your PivotTable when you are not connected to your network. However, you cannot refresh the data in the PivotTable because the refresh operation queries the original source data on your network, not the local cube file.
