An error occurs when using Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro: "This functionality is only available in the fully-featured Expression Encoder Pro."

Symptoms

Attempting to use certain features of Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro will result in the following message:

This functionality is only available in the fully-featured Expression Encoder Pro.




Use of the following features will cause this message to be displayed:

  • Running a screen capture for longer than 10 minutes.
  • Use of an MPEG-2 source for input.
  • Use of AVCHD for input.
  • Use of Dolby Digital audio input.
  • Attempt to output in H.264 format.
  • Attempt to output in AAC-LC format.
  • Use of IIS Live Smooth Streaming.

Cause

Only the retail version of Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro allows for the use of the features listed above. Royalty-based codecs are not included in the non-retail versions of Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro. IIS Live Smooth Streaming is a high-level feature that is only included in retail versions of Expression Encoder 4 Pro.
