Symptoms

If you open a chart saved in an earlier version of Microsoft Excel, the category labels on the x-axis of your chart are displayed differently than in the earlier version of Excel.

Cause

Excel 2000 displays charts differently than earlier versions of Excel if they contain multiple-level category labels.

The following behaviors are new to Excel 2000:
A separator line is placed between each category in the hierarchy of the category labels.

You can only rotate the topmost level of category labels.

To control the alignment of the category labels on your chart, use the settings available on the Alignment tab of the Format Axis dialog box.
