XL2000: Errors Activating Microsoft Map Created in an Earlier Version of Excel

Symptoms

When you double-click a Microsoft Map object, you receive a partial error message similar to the following:
A error occurred reading the file Europe.tab; the feature defined in this file may be missing or incorrectly formatted when it is redrawn. Click OK to continue. Click OK to All to continue and supress this warning for other features. Click Cancel to stop reconstructing the
If you click OK, you may receive the error message several more times. If you click Cancel, you receive the following error message:
Cannot start the source application for this object.
If you click OK to All, you experience one of the following problems:
  • You receive the following error message:
    The Microsoft Map cannot be activated because one or more required components are unavailable
    -or-

  • The Map object is activated but all of the map features are removed from the map.

Cause

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • The map was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Excel.
-and-
  • You used either of the following maps:

    • Europe
    • World Countries

    -or-

  • Your map utlilized any of the following map features:

    • Europe Airports
    • Europe Cities
    • Europe Countries
    • Europe Highways
    • Europe Major Cities
    • World Capitals and Major Cities
    • World Countries and Regions
Microsoft Excel 2000 does not install any of the above maps or map features for Microsoft Map.

Resolution

To resolve the problem, copy the following files from the \Os\Msapps\Datamap\Data folder on your Microsoft Office 97 CD to the C:\Program Files\Common files\Microsoft Shared\Datamap\Data folder your hard disk:
