Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You enable the CrashOnAuditFail setting on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.
  • You try to shut down or restart the computer.
In this scenario, you receive a stop error message that resembles the following:

0xc0000244 - {Audit Failed}

An attempt to generate a security audit failed.

Note The first parameter of the stop code is 0xC0000008.

↑ Back to the top

Cause

This issue is caused by a race condition during the shutdown process. The Local Security Authority (LSA) tries to write an audit event in the event logs after the event log service has stopped in response to the request of the operating system shutdown. If CrashOnAuditFail is configured correctly, then the operating system triggers the stop code that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
